Brass and Beyond is run by Michael. He is a Head of Music in a secondary school, a member of the award-winning Bideford Brass Band, and a qualified teacher of over 20-years experience.

Qualifications

Michael trained at the London College of Music on the BMus (Performance) course, studying the trumpet and piano. In his final year he was awarded the James Watson Brass Prize. He was also selected for the Brass Fellowship at the London College of Music following his final year. Michael gained his PGCE in Secondary Music from The Institute of Education in London in 2004.

Michael has performed in a wide variety of different contexts, at home and abroad. Performances range from Symphony Orchestra concerts in the Barbican Concert Hall to funk band gigs in the Cavern Club in Liverpool. His diverse musical tastes and performing experience mean that he can tailor his teaching to each pupil’s interests.

Education Experience

Michael began his education career after graduating from the London College of Music. He worked in several Music Services in London, teaching brass instruments and piano. During this time he was lucky enough to take part in music education projects with the Siyakhula Music Project from South Africa and the British Council in Shanghai. From 2004 he has taught Music in secondary schools and has held Head of Music and Head of Performing Arts positions in schools in London, the South East and the South West. Many of his students have progressed to university and conservatoire Music courses and some now pursue busy careers in the Music industry.
